Our cycling community

York-based social enterprise Get Cycling has spent eleven years supporting newcomers into cycling: both locally and nationally. Now all Get Cycling’s activities in events, training and programmes are being transferred into a new charity, a Community Benefit Society, financed partly by community shareholders.

Our vision

To become a focus for engaging more people in regular cycling, adding pioneering events and support programmes to our existing well-developed operations. By doing this we will help our communities become more cycle-friendly, more active, more healthy, more equitable, more practically mobile and more environment-friendly.

What We Do

We provide cycling events and support programmes for local authorities, community groups, businesses, schools, universities and disability support groups. All staff, assets and trading in these areas will transfer to the new Community Benefit Society, which will add member benefits to its activities. Get Cycling CBS will use its charitable status to develop new activities including Opportunity Bikes: involving revenue-creating activities which support workers and volunteers with barriers to employment.

Remaining in the pre-existing Community Interest Company are Get Cycling’s local bike shop and its very specialised department retailing disability cycles nationally. There will be lots of cooperation between the two social enterprises, and they will both, at first, be based in Hospital Fields Road, sharing many facilities and related costs, but distinct as trading entities, with separate staff, management, assets, finances and boards of trustees.

CYCLING IS A RIGHT

We all have a right to ride our bikes in a fear-free, healthy, sustainable, equitable, community-friendly way. Cycling is rising up the social agenda all the time, but we have such a long way to go, and we need to tackle the barriers at all levels. Please support us in trying to make it happen.

DISABILITY CYCLING

We provide inclusive try-out roadshows, special school activity days and companion cycles for people with dementia. Better funding will allow us to improve our existing services and offer certain all-ability cycling holidays which we have already pioneered.

COURSES AND CLASSES

People of all ages need and want to learn new skills and build up confidence. Through our College of Cycling we will offer courses and classes for the general public on how to get into cycling. These will be day classes for local people, regular sessions in schools, and regional visits from our College of Cycling touring unit. We will also develop residential ‘learning holidays’ for others. Where better to start riding than on the bike paths of York?

OPPORTUNITY BIKES

It’s not just about cycling, It’s about people and communities. Alongside all existing and new activities we will expand our supported opportunities for people who have difficulties in life. This will build, in a careful and measured way, on our successful previous experience of running such programmes in York and Scarborough. Opportunity Bikes will integrate in a meaningful form, with other aspects of our activities but will require specialised management and grant support. Training based on bike recycling and event delivery may be involved.

What are community shares?

These are shares in a community owned benefit society: similar to how community groups invest in a local hydro-electric scheme or take over the village pub. We aim to raise £200K of community investment in withdrawable shares. There are two stages. The first £140K is almost reached, and is likely to be drawn down soon so that Get Cycling CBS can start investing in growth almost immediately. The investment platform remains open until the 11th March 2020, for further investment, and our target is the final £60K.

Your investment gives strength to our worthwhile work, but because Get Cycling CBS is a trading charity you can anticipate a 4% annual return on investment. But there’s more than that. This offer qualifies for Social Investment Tax Relief, so for every £1000 invested you get £300 back from HMRC in Year 1. Putting these two returns together gives you a very welcome total net gain of 13.2% for each of the first three years, presuming you pay a little tax on the 4% interest.

You will find on this website a short video about our work, plus the formal share offer and the business plan it is based on. To find out more please visit www.ethex.org.uk/getcycling, where you can subscribe for shares.

A Message from Our Founders

It has been quite a journey! Get Cycling began in 2008 just as public sector cuts kicked in: but we diversified and survived. Each year we have supported more and more people into cycling, virtually without grant aid. Our unusual and highly effective work in events, programmes and training now needs to be taken over by a better resourced organisation with stronger community outreach: which is why we are transferring these activities into a charitable Community Benefit Society.

We will give strong personal support to the new CBS, helping develop creative partnerships, and volunteering here and there. We’ll also be investors. It’s all exciting, but we will ease off a little personally, giving opportunity for our talented staff to take more responsibility. Jim will move with the events and programmes staff into the new CBS, and take responsibility for business development and partnerships work. This team will be strengthened soon after by a new chief executive or general manager, plus further staff.

We love bikes, but it’s really all about people. We have a very experienced and committed team, backed up by our strong new board of trustees. They will make us more effective in that part of our existing work which is national, but there will also be much stronger emphasis on York itself. We will work with other cycling organisations to help make it a paradigm for commitment to people-friendly, sustainable transport. We hope you will want to join us, wherever you live. There’s a lot to do!

Our future

Imagine a vibrant, inventive, revenue-earning community benefit society doing everything it can to increase the prestige and presence of cyclists. To be effective in the community we need to be community owned, with a strong base of volunteers supported by our professional staff. (No investor is expected to also be a volunteer, but you are welcome to discuss this with us.)

We also need to provide exclusive and attractive services for our investor-members. We will supply you with such practical support services, but we also hope it will be sociable and fun for you. Please remember it’s called a Community Benefit Society for a reason, and you as investor members are the Community in question. Get Cycling CBS is a shareholder charity whose staff and trustees work to your benefit and ultimately answer to you.
